Welcome to AVER-San Antonio!
American Veteran's for Equal Rights (AVER) - San Antonio is a Chapter of a nationwide organization formed to defeat the Department of Defense (DOD) policy of "Don't Ask - Don't Tell!" compromise established by President Bill Clinton who campaigned to allow GLBT service members to remain in the military regardless of their sexual orientation. Statistics demonstrate that even now, military members are being discharged for merely being GLBT. During the last 6 years however, as the nation fights wars on two fronts (Iraq and Afghanistan) the military has actually discharged LESS gays from the military - let's face it with low recruitment, they need every man or woman they can get - regardless of their sexual orientation. The chart below shows discharges under "Don't Ask - Don't Tell!" since it inception in 1994. The first four years indicate the beginning of the Clinton administration. Discharges were down but slightly rising.
Graphic courtesy of WWW.SLDN.ORG Of particular note is that beginning in 2001 and into 2005, you will notice a decrease in discharges. Why? Does this mean that DADT is working. No! This demonstrates the position of AVER that ANYONE regardless of sexual orientation can remain in the US military. The military is retaining all military personnel to continue the fight for freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan.
AVER MISSION To defeat "Don't ask - don't tell!" (Anyone! - regardless of sexual orientation should be allowed to serve in the u.s. military)
